Matias lives a modest life in Toronto, a life nothing like the one he lived back home. A former police officer, and professional torturer from an unidentified country in Latin America, Matias now works as a janitor at the local university hiding his past underneath a mediocre life. From time to time, he calls his family from a public phone late at night, his calls solely received by his young daughter Rosa – the only family member willing to talk to him. His wife is ashamed of him and his dark past and refuses to speak to him.
As time goes on, loneliness and remorse begin to show in Matias’s life. He is haunted by flashbacks that come and go of people marching on the street, police brutality, sounds of gunfire, police sirens, and voices begging for mercy and justice. Matias, too afraid to account for his actions, tries to find tranquility in his janitorial work, the Community Church and Father Carlos.
One night during his visit to the neighborhood bar, Matías is involved in an altercation and comes to the defense of a woman named Lola. This is the beginning of a relationship that will lead Matías to look for love and rebuild his life again, but destiny does not forget his dark past and will make him pay for his bad actions.

Matías lleva una vida modesta en Toronto, muy distinta a la que tenía en su tierra natal. Antiguo agente de policía y torturador profesional de un país latinoamericano no identificado, Matías trabaja ahora como conserje en la universidad local, ocultando su pasado tras una vida anodina. De vez en cuando, llama a su familia desde un teléfono público a altas horas de la noche; sus llamadas solo son atendidas por su hija pequeña, Rosa, la única de la familia dispuesta a hablar con él. Su esposa, avergonzada de él y de su oscuro pasado, se niega a dirigirle la palabra.
Con el paso del tiempo, la soledad y el remordimiento empiezan a hacerse presentes en la vida de Matías. Le atormentan recuerdos recurrentes de manifestaciones callejeras, brutalidad policial, disparos, sirenas y voces que suplican clemencia y justicia. Demasiado temeroso para asumir las consecuencias de sus actos, Matías intenta hallar sosiego en su trabajo de conserje, en la iglesia de la comunidad y en la figura del padre Carlos.
Una noche, mientras visita el bar del barrio, Matías se ve envuelto en un altercado y sale en defensa de una mujer llamada Lola. Este suceso marca el inicio de una relación que llevará a Matías a buscar el amor y a reconstruir su vida; sin embargo, el destino no olvida su oscuro pasado y le hará pagar por sus malas acciones.
