The story centers on Enrique Aet (Diego Bertie), the eldest child of a well-to-do Lima family whose engineer father died in 1886 when Enrique was 10. More than 20 years later, he has followed his father’s calling and heads a road project into the Amazonian jungle, the goal being nothing less than to unite the country and incorporate the enormous Amazon into the rest of Peru, after the terrible War of the Pacific.
