The Solar System

“The five [stars] give remarkable performances in very juicy roles” eCartelera

It’s Christmas Eve in Lima and the Del Solar family are getting together for the first time in over two years.

Leonardo Del Solar, a powerful politician who always paid more attention to his work than to his family, turns up on the doorstep of his old house to be reunited with his two children, Edurne and Pavel, and his grandson Puli, a very special nine-year-old boy. But Leonardo hasn’t come alone. He’s brought his girlfriend Ines (Adriana Ugarte, Pedro Almodóvar’s Julieta 2016), who also happens to be Pavel’s ex-girlfriend. As the night goes on, conflicts from the past start to raise their ugly heads and the family get-together quickly becomes the scene for accusations, revelations and perhaps even a reconciliation. There is, after all, a fine line between love and hate around any family dinner table.

A drama that’s brimming with black comedy, this Spanish-Peruvian co-production, an adaptation of a stage play about family conflict, is the latest work from filmmaking duo Bacha Caravedo (who is in charge of the performance side of the duo’s films) and Chinón Higashionna (who takes care of the visual aspect).

The film took part in the Cannes Film Market in May 2018.

The Caravedo/Higashionna duo won the Silver Biznaga for Best Director in the “Territorio Latinoamericano” section of the 2015 Málaga Film Festival, Spain with their previous film, Perro guardián.
